St. Patrick’s Day’s origins in the United States can be traced back all the way back to 1601 in present-day St. Augustine, Florida. That year, on March 17, the day St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world, Spanish settlers in the area celebrated the holiday with a parade organized by their Irish vicar. Almost 200 years later, homesick Irish soldiers abroad in New York City to honor the Irish patron saint, and enthusiasm for the Irish holiday began to take root. The rest is history.
St. Patrick himself was born in Roman Britain in the fifth century and captured and brought to Ireland as a slave. He eventually escaped and is credited with bringing Catholicism to the people of Ireland. It is believed he died on March 17, and he is celebrated today as the patron saint of Ireland. Irish folklore even alleges that he introduced shamrocks to Ireland by using the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
