Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Houston in 2026

Cinco de Mayo is heavily celebrated in the United States as a day of toasting Mexican culture. Commonly mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which is on September 16, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, where Mexican forces killed about 1,000 French troops. The French troops, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, didn’t leave Mexico for good until about five years after the battle ended, but the Battle of Puebla rings out to this day as a symbol of Mexican independence over foreign dominance.

Today, Cinco de Mayo is frequently celebrated in the US with parades, fiestas, fun and more. Because of Texas’ proximity to Mexico, many Texas cities do Cinco de Mayo in a big way, celebrating Mexican heritage and this special day with parties and festivities. Houston, just a few short hours from the Mexican border by car, hosts a number of fun celebrations to toast this historic day. If you’re looking to celebrate Cinco this year, head to Houston for big-time fun.
