Mardi Gras, Texas-Style

Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, is a holiday in Louisiana. Fat Tuesday marks the day before the Lenten season when those who celebrate tend to indulge in decadent food before they begin a period of fasting and self-discipline in accordance with their religious beliefs. Fat Tuesday, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and even the U.S. at large, is often celebrated throughout the week and weekend before (and oftentimes longer!) with extravagant parties, parades and festivities.

If you can’t make it to NOLA for the ultimate party in 2023, no worries. Texas has you covered! Galveston Island has the third-largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States and the biggest in Texas, and it will have you donning your green, gold and purple and hoping you pull the baby out of the king cake. So grab a mask and some beads, get ready to dip your toes in the sand and even bring the kids- the 112th Galveston Island Mardi Gras Celebration is not to be missed!

4 fun things to do at Mardi Gras Galveston

  • Catch some great live music. Chris Janson and Ghostland Observatory are the headliners for the event, but you can also catch a number of other talented bands and musicians at this multi-week event. With multiple stages and multiple days to catch performances, you are sure to find something you love!
  • Feast your eyes on a celebratory parade. There are so many to choose from! There’s an umbrella parade and a golf cart parade, a fire truck parade and a bus parade… the list goes on! Each parade brings the excitement and energy you can expect from a Mardi Gras-themed event, so be prepared for a grand old time.
  • Take the kids to check out FamilyGras. Multiple events at the overall Mardi Gras celebration are geared specifically toward kids, so they can partake in the fun of the season. Be sure to have kids 12 and younger print out the coloring page before the event to enter the coloring contest and compete for a chance to ride on a parade float. How cool!
  • Run for fun before you get your party on. The Jolly Jester Jaunt 5K takes place on Saturday, February 11, and grants you access to some fun festival activities before you make a run for it, literally! Meet other runners, get your heart pumping and spend your Saturday morning enjoying the outdoors before the party really begins!

Let the good times roll!
