The legend of Crazy Water dates all the way back to 1881. Legend has it that an old woman sat by a well drinking water, and the water kept her from going crazy. Soon after, everyone began flocking to the well, which was quickly deemed the “Crazy Well.” According to the tale, it even healed a man who had been diagnosed with “no hope” after a long stomach ailment. This man, Ed Dismuke, healed by the “crazy well water,” then started the Famous Mineral Water Company in 1904.
In reality, the story of the origin of this “crazy water” from Texas is a little different. A family moved to the Mineral Wells area in the 1880s and drank from a well on their property. They noticed that the funny-tasting water the well produced actually helped heal their rheumatism, so they began selling their water for $.05 a cup. More wells quickly popped up around town. By 1900, Mineral Wells was the premiere spa destination in the south, hosting thousands who came to heal their ailments with the magic water. Ed Dismuke then started his mineral water company in 1904 and the rest, as they say, is history.
The area saw major expansion and growth in the early 20th Century, and people traveled from all over to experience the wells, the water, the bathhouses, hotels and treatments offered in Mineral Wells. But in the 1940s, with World War II transpiring, fewer people were able to travel to Mineral Wells for treatment. The subsequent decades saw many changes for the business, which eventually evolved to become the Crazy Water brand Texans know and love today.
Today, visitors to the Mineral Wells can partake in a number of experiences based around Crazy Water. Visitors can take a one-hour tour for $5 that provides a bottle of Crazy Water per person and covers several blocks and all the history of the (crazy) brand. After the tour, guests can indulge in services from the Crazy Water Bathhouse and Spa, where they can enjoy treatments such as bath soaks, facials, massages and more. Guests can then stop by the Coffee & Water Bar for a delicious beverage of their choosing, all of which utilize Crazy Water to make or brew.
Don’t forget to take a bottle (or two, or four!) with you when you leave Mineral Wells- the (crazy) water is said to be mad-beneficial with all the minerals bottled directly from Mother Nature herself. Stay hydrated, friends!
