Fantastic Fredericksburg: A Weekend Away in Hill Country

Fredericksburg, Texas, is a city in central Texas about 70 miles from San Antonio with a population of just more than 10,000 people and deep German roots. Originally settled in 1846, Fredericksburg is sometimes referred to as Fritztown, after Prince Frederick of Prussia, the city’s namesake. The city still holds dear its German roots, and the city is a popular spot for tourists from all over to soak up Texas’ famed Hill Country and enjoy a slower pace for a time while frolicking in the city’s mild climate and pretty scenery.

When many people think of Fredericksburg, they think of wineries. And with good reason! The region is home to more than 100 wineries and counting, making it the perfect destination to enjoy a bottle of vino and learn more about the process that brings this beloved drink to fruition. However, Fredericksburg has a lot to offer visitors of all ages, even those who don’t (or can’t) imbibe. If Fredericksburg is on your mind but wine tasting isn’t up your alley, here are five awesome activities you can do to enjoy this beautiful city sans adult beverages.

5 fun ways to enjoy Fredericksburg with guests of all ages

  1. Take a narrated Historic District Trolley Tour. Learn all about the fascinating history of the city, including tidbits about the architecture, churches and more on this narrated tour. Kick your feet up in an air-conditioned bus and sip cold water while you peruse the streets of Fredericksburg in style. Great for all ages, this tour will help you gain better understanding of the city and its heritage.
  2. Visit with bats at Old Tunnel State Park. From May until October, visitors to Texas’ smallest state park can watch millions of bats take to the sky from the old railroad tunnel at this park. During the day you can also picnic, play and bird watch at this park. Nightly tours are available to learn more about the Mexican free-tailed bats that call this park home for a fee.
  3. Get up close and personal with a rhino at the Rhinory. Okay, so, technically this activity is at a winery. And it isn’t available to all travelers, only those 12 and older. But still, this experience is too cool to not mention! Spend time learning about and interacting with rhinos in the heart of Fredericksburg on a 55-acre farm and hear about the conservation efforts of this unique place.
  4. Enjoy a visit with elephants at The Elephant Preserve. Unlike the rhino experience above, this experience is for all ages and enables you to learn about Asian Elephants. The 1.5-hour animal exhibition enables you to see and engage with several different types of animals that live on this Fredericksburg preserve. So cool! This site is engaged in conservation efforts as there are fewer than 35,000 Asian elephants left in the world.
  5. See giraffes in a new way at Longneck Manor. Book a tour at Longneck Manor to see giraffes and rhinos up close for a one-of-a-kind experience. The 75-minute tour is open to all ages and will enable you to snap gorgeous photos and create memories that will last a lifetime. You might even get to feed these elegant animals!
