You don’t need to love beer and bratwurst to be able to enjoy Oktoberfest. Started in 1810 as a celebration of a royal wedding, Oktoberfest, often referred to as Wiesn in Germany, is a three-week celebration of German culture and traditions in September and October. Although this original Oktoberfest is in Munich, celebrations paying tribute to this famous affair are popular around the world and are a great excuse to get together with friends and family and enjoy some fun together. 

Oktoberfest is really a large festival combining some classically German things. Visitors can drink beer and eat pretzels, take part in Stein holding competitions and wear traditional German clothing, such as Dirndls and lederhosen. The festival also includes rides, shopping, live entertainment and more. If Germany isn’t in your cards this fall, no worries! The Texas Hill Country has some fabulous Oktoberfest celebrations that will make you forget you are still stateside for this fun festival.

  • Fredericksburg Oktoberfest, October 2-4. The largest and most well-known Oktoberfest in Hill Country, the Fredericksburg Oktoberfest is a truly Texas-sized celebration of the area’s German roots. From live music to festive fare and shopping to kids’ activities, there is something for everyone at this raucous festival. Festive dress is encouraged and everyone is practically required to have a great time. 
  • Austoberfest, October 3. This one-day event packs a ton of fun into a few short hours. Guests to Austin’s Oktoberfest can expect live music, kids zones, German food and beer and so much more. Kids younger than 12 can get into the event for free, so raise a toast to that! Expect games, friendly competition and maybe even learn a little bit of German while you’re there. Prost!
  • Wurstfest New Braunfels, November 6-15. Touted as “the best 10 days in sausage history,” Wurstfest is a huge celebration of all things German. From German music and entertainment to German delicacies and more, this 10-day festival is German fun and then some. Get ready for games, live entertainment, dancing, carnival rides and, of course, wurst!
