The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican tradition with both Indigenous and Spanish roots. Meant to honor those no longer living, Day of the Dead seeks to celebrate the lives of beloved family members who have passed on. The day is typically marked with altars (ofrendas), flowers, food and mementos such as sugar skulls and marigolds that guide the deceased back for this special day of remembrance. 

San Antonio’s celebration of Dia de los Muertos is largely considered to be the biggest in the United States. Starting at 7 pm, this festive parade will literally light up the city in remembrance and celebration of loved ones no longer living. 
  • Calaverita Run 5K & Family Walk, October 24, 2026. Grab your favorite sneakers and walk or run this 3.1 mile route that encourages tradition and remembrance. Participants will have the option to add a photo of their loved one to their race bib as well as a space to write in a loved one’s name on the “For Whom Do You Run” wall at the event. Get out and enjoy some fresh air and fond memories.
  • Muertos Fest at Hemisfair, October 23-25, 2026. Three days of art, music, remembrance and celebration await at the largest Dia de los Muertos fest in the country. Head to Hemisfair features more than 80 altars, a fashion show, musical performances, food, entertainment, workshops and more meant to celebrate and honor this important day.
