Texas Towns to Love: Livingston

Livingston, Texas, originally called Springfield, is a tiny town of about 6,000 residents between Lufkin and Houston. Full of quaint spaces and delightful stops, Livingston is located next to Lake Livingston, the second-largest lake in Texas. Whether you want to take a quick one-day road trip or kick off your shoes and stay awhile, Livingston would love to have you.

Nature lovers and city slickers alike are sure to love the small town charm Livingston offers up. From a vibrant downtown to a castle for rent in the area, Livingston has a lot to offer anyone who wants to visit. If you’re ready to explore an off-the-beaten-path Texas town, add Livingston to your bucket list.

Four ways to explore Livingston, Texas, in 2026

  1. Check out the castle at Lake Livingston. Okay… You can’t actually go inside this castle unless you rent it, but you can certainly go and visit and maybe snap a few photos while you’re there (and maybe rent it if that’s your thing!). Modeled after German castles, this unique landmark at the lake is a fun site to see, if only from afar.
  2. Stroll down Livingston’s Historical Downtown Main Street. Some of the original buildings on Main Street were wiped out in a fire in 1902, but Livingston rebuilt and the downtown is as inviting as ever. Whether you want to shop, dine, grab a coffee or just meander, Livingston’s Main Street District is the perfect spot for you.
  3. Go for a hike in the Sam Houston National Forest. Known for lush greenery and loads of wildlife, the Sam Houston National Forest is a great spot where you can connect with nature. Visitors can ride horses, bike, fish, camp, hunt and more at this national forest that encompasses more than 150,000 acres of land.
  4. Enjoy the water at Lake Livingston State Park. Although you can no longer rent watercraft at Lake Livingston State Park, you can certainly still enjoy boating on the lake if you have your own vessel. Guests also enjoy swimming, fishing, geocaching and more at this serene lake spot. Just watch out for alligators! Maybe brush up on alligator safety before your visit.
