Durant, Oklahoma, also known as the “City of Magnolias,” is a peaceful spot in southeastern Oklahoma, just over the border from Texas. Originally named Eagle City when it was founded in 1872, Durant was later renamed after one of the town’s earliest settlers, Dixon Durant. The town became a significant trading post for the Choctaw Nation, was incorporated in 1901 and today is a major cultural and economic hub for southeastern Oklahoma. And it’s a great spot for a getaway, too. 

Springtime is an especially pretty time of year to visit the Durant area. Temperatures are typically in the 70s, so outdoor activities are enjoyable and plentiful. Whether you want to attend a local festival, go for a hike, observe local wildlife or anything else you can dream up, Durant is a great spot to be.   • Rendezvous at Fort Washita– Built in 1842, Fort Washita was a former US military base near Durant. Abandoned after the Civil War, Fort Washita eventually was entered onto the National Registry of Historic Places and is now of interest to visitors. This April 1-5, 2025, guests can learn about the history of this fascinating place as well as see reenactments from trappers, traders, mountain men and more. This is truly a festive event where history comes to life. April 1-5. 
  • McAlestar Italian Festival– Whether or not you love pasta you are sure to have a great time at this festival that celebrates Italian food, heritage and fun. Guests can sample all kinds of Italian fare, shop with unique vendors, enjoy live entertainment and more. This event takes over the Pittsburg County Expo Center for two days in early May and is a family-friendly great time. May 8-9. 
  • Magnolia Festival of Oklahoma– A family-friendly Durant staple since 1997, the Magnolia Festival of Oklahoma honors the heritage of Durant, also known as the City of Magnolias. Vendors, food trucks and fun merge to create a festival that is welcoming and fun for all. Live entertainment, a 5K fun run and a veteran’s reception round out the celebration at this fun festival you don’t want to miss. May 28-30.
