Soak Up Small Town Charm in Granbury

Head southwest out of Fort Worth and you may stumble upon Granbury, a town of just more than 10,000 that was voted one of USA Today’s Best Historic Small Towns in 2021. Head to the town square and you’ll have no trouble figuring out why. With more than 40 unique shops and restaurants and one of the oldest courthouses in the state of Texas, Granbury’s town square looks like the backdrop to a Hallmark movie. The appeal of this quaint small town is hard to miss.

More than just a darling small town- although a darling small town it is!- Granbury is the perfect spot for a spring or summer weekend getaway. Home to a lake, a city beach, a popular town square and more, Granbury has a lot to offer visitors of all ages. Whether you want to shop, relax, fish, boat, you name it, you can do it in Granbury. If you are looking for a destination for a quick getaway this travel season, here are five reasons you should consider Granbury, Texas.

Five ways to have fun in Granbury

  1. Hit the beach. The Granbury City Beach Park, that is. Perfect for locals and visitors alike, the beach is fun year-round and offers all types of activities. Pack a lunch and have a picnic, play at the splash pad, dip your toes in the water or even rent kayaks or paddleboards in the summer months. Free life jackets are available for guests and the beach is walking distance from the town square.
  2. Catch a movie. The historic Brazos Drive-In is the perfect place to cuddle up in your car with your favorite people and watch something on the big screen. Concessions are available for purchase, and admission is charged by the carload, making this spot an affordable place for family fun. The Brazos Drive-In is one of the few continuously operating drive in movie theaters left in the great state of Texas. So cool!
  3. Get spooked. If you’re feeling brave, you might want to check out the Granbury Ghosts and Legends Tour. Voted one of the top in country by Frommers, the Ghosts and Legends Tour will enthrall you with creepy tales about Indian Joe, the Lady in Red and more. This tour takes place weekend nights to really set the mood. Go at your own risk!
  4. Support local theater. The Granbury Opera House was originally built in 1886 and underwent a massive renovation in 2012 to make a premiere destination to watch live theater. The Granbury Theatre Company uses this facility to host a number of exciting performances throughout the year, which includes a “Broadway on the Brazos” season that produces nine incredible shows every year.
  5. Learn about the history of the area. From the fascinating to the macabre, Granbury has a rich history and a number of museums that showcase this history in a fascinating way! Spend a day remembering yesteryear with a trip to various museums in the area. The Old Jail Museum will give you a glimpse of old-fashioned gallows, and the Historic Railroad Depot will give you a taste of frontier days when train transport was vital to a town’s growth and success.
