Created in 1974, Cadillac Ranch, located along Highway 40 (and former Route 66) in Amarillo, is an ode to American car culture. The art installation consists of 10 cars, stuck nose-first in the ground, and has grown to a cultural phenomenon in the years since its inception more than 50 years ago. Now, travelers headed east and west through the great state of Texas flock to this roadside oddity to spray paint their names or draw on these vehicles from yesteryear.
Cadillac Ranch was commissioned by a millionaire and brought to fruition by a group of artists called Ant Farm. The installation is meant to inspire rebellion, and spray painting on the cars at Cadillac Ranch was a popular rite of passage from the beginning. Because of the layers and layers of spray paint now decorate these vehicles, the cars themselves are ever-changing, and visitors who check out the installation again and again won’t see the same art twice.
