If you’re planning a trip to the Texas Hill Country this spring, you might want to check out the Frio Bat Flight Tour in Concan. Every night around dusk, 10 to 12 million Mexican Free-tailed Bats ascend into the evening sky. It’s both eerie and completely mesmerizing- an absolute must-see when you’re in the area.
The Frio Cave, located along the Frio River just northeast of Uvalde, Texas, is a maternity cave for this bat species. The bats fly south for the winter and make their home in this cave from March until September and give birth to their pups here.
During their evening flight, visitors can usually see raptors swooping in in hopes of catching dinner. Several different birds of prey catch the bats mid-flight for their evening meal. Species you might see flying amongst the bats on their evening ascension include six different types of hawks as well as several types of falcons. You may also catch several different types of birds as well as a few four-footed friends entering the cave before the flight in hopes of snagging dinner as it rests. It’s neat to see Mother Nature in action!
