Geocaching Adventures in Baytown

Baytown, Texas, was officially founded in 1948, but the area where Baytown sits was originally settled in 1822. The city is located on Houston’s east side and rests on the northern side of Galveston Bay. It is a large industrial area that both Chevron and ExxonMobil call home. With its mild climate and great location near Houston and Galveston, Baytown is an exciting place to be. Visitors to this fun south Texas spot have something else exciting to look forward to during their visit: the Baytown Geocache Tour. This is a “geocaching adventure in Baytown where family, history and nature come together,” according to the Visit Baytown website. Travelers young and old will love exploring new places and hunting for the hidden geocaches along the way- and possibly even earning some prizes in the process. Embark on this free and fun activity on your next visit to Baytown.

What is geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor adventure where you find a given spot with a GPS-enabled device and look for the treasure hidden at that spot. Geocaching can happen anywhere in the world. Launched in 2000, geocaching was originally fairly niche and there were, to start, only 75 geocaches in the world. Nowadays there are more than 3 million geocaches in 190 countries. In 2022, almost 2 million people geocached and found an average of 43 geocaches each. Cool!

How do I geocache?

To start geocaching, you can create a free account Geocaching.com or download the Geocache app and create a free account there. Then enable your GPS to search for geocaches near you, wherever you are! When you find a geocache, sign the logbook on the website or app, take a prize and leave something of equal or greater value in return.

Can anyone geocache?

Definitely! Geocaching is fun for everyone young and old. It is fun to do by yourself, with your family, with a Scout group and so on. It is a neat way to explore a new area and enjoy the space around you.

What is the Baytown GeoTour?

This GeoTour, which is free to participate in, has 31 spots around the city that visitors can attempt to find using GPS coordinates and clues. Visitors are encouraged to find as many or as few as they want! These geocaches are fun to find and will take guests to some fun spots around the city and encourage you to interact with the space around you.

Even better? There are prizes! There are multiple ways to earn points that can accumulate for you to win a prize, and you can check all of the details on the website here. If you earn a minimum of 28 points, 22 of which must come from finding geocaches, you can even earn a trackable geocoin, which will help you as you embark on more geocaching adventures. So cool!
