Celebrate Dia de los Muertos in San Antonio

Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a holiday celebrated on and around November 1 that has roots in Mexico. According to History.com, the Day of the Dead is “a blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion and Spanish culture.” It is believed that, on the Day of the Dead, the souls of deceased relatives can return to their families as the families celebrate their loved ones with food, drink and celebrations, especially in San Antonio.

Many families who celebrate Dia de los Muertos honor an important tradition that is a major component of the holiday: the ofrenda. Ofendas, or altars, are tables or mantels that are traditionally set up with photos of deceased loved ones as well as candles and other items. During the festivities surrounding the Day of the Dead, families leave favorite items and food for their deceased loved ones on the ofrenda as a welcome gift when their souls return.

The Dia de los Muertos celebrations are often depicted with skulls and bright colors. Many people feast on sugar skulls during the celebrations and dress up in bright colors to celebrate those gone too soon. Not dissimilar to Halloween, Day of the Dead sometimes has parades and parties and other festive events meant to celebrate those loved and lost. And no other place in the United States celebrates with as much excitement as San Antonio, Texas. If you are seeking to take part in these festive celebrations that honor deceased loved ones, head to central Texas for a getaway you won’t soon forget.
