Named for Union General Israel B. Richardson, Fort Richardson was active from 1867 to 1878. The fort was declared a historic site in 1963 and opened to the public in 1973 as Fort Richardson State Historic Park. Visitors can now tour seven historic buildings on the property, including a hospital, a guardhouse, a commissary and more.
