Thanksgiving. A time to come together with family, share great food, reminisce about the year gone by, maybe watch some football. It’s a time to start making the holiday shopping list and checking it twice and relishing the relative calm of Thanksgiving before the chaos of Christmas and December holidays.
Maybe this year, though, you’ve decided to do Thanksgiving differently. Maybe you’ll be traveling this year, wanting to reflect on the holidays away from home. Maybe the family is unable to gather due to time restraints, money constraints or just a desire to hunker down and spend time together alone. Whatever the reason, if you aren’t hosting or attending a big feast this year, you can still get in the spirit of the season by giving back.
What better way to spend a day of thanks than serving those around you? If you’ll be in Houston for the Thanksgiving season in 2023, here a few great ways to support the community and spread joy on turkey day.
Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities in the Houston area 2023
- Operation Turkey– Volunteers come together the night before Thanksgiving to smoke turkeys and prep for Thanksgiving morning at an event called Turkey Tailgate. Then, on Thanksgiving morning from 8 am- 12 pm, volunteers are needed to prepare, package and deliver meals to deserving individuals and families throughout the community. Talk about a wonderful way to give back!
- Meals on Wheels Thanksgiving– Have some time Thanksgiving morning but hoping to not leave the house? This opportunity is perfect for you! Assist Meals on Wheels by making calls Thanksgiving morning to homebound seniors to spread holiday cheer. You will not have to use your own phone number to spread holiday cheer-you just a great attitude and a desire to spread joy.
- Houston Food Bank– The Houston Food Bank works year-round to support those in need in the greater Houston area. As expected, though, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the month of November to support the food bank, as well as plenty of opportunities on Thanksgiving to help inspect food, sort food, deliver food and so on. Whether you have an hour or a week, you can find an opportunity to help at the Houston Food Bank.
- City Wide Club of America– Last year the City Wide Club served 3.3 million individuals with the donation of bikes, food, clothes, toys and more. Wow! What a fantastic impact on the Houston community! If you want to be part of the action this year, the club needs volunteers the day before Thanksgiving to prep for the big day and then volunteers day of to distribute. Multiple shifts are available, and they are also signing up volunteers for Christmas now, too, if that’s in your journey for 2023.
