Take a Sentimental Journey to the Big Band Era

Posted on: February 12th, 2013 by admin No Comments

This coming weekend will be a great time to be in Corpus Christi, as you can take a sentimental journey back to the 40s through performances of big band and swing music. In the WW II era, this music reigned supreme through musicians like Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and the Andrews Sisters who produced hits like “In the Mood,” “Boogie Woogie” and “I’ll Never Smile Again.” The timelessness of the big band sound transcends generation, being just as irresistibly appealing now as it was then.

On February 15, head over to the USS Lexington, one of the most decorated aircraft carriers in our country’s military history,  where an orchestra and vocalists will commemorate the 70th anniversary of this vessel with “Stage Door Canteen,” a musical program of the era. Admission is $30 per person or $55 per couple.

The big band entertainment will continue on February 16, when The One and Only Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will perform at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in the Performing Arts Center. It will be an evening to remember as the auditorium explodes with the swinging tunes couples jitterbugged to in the 40s.
