Texas Attractions: San Angelo

Posted on: April 2nd, 2013 by admin No Comments

Lying in the center of West Texas ranching country is San Angelo, a bustling metro area that offers visitors a delightful mix of historic attractions, arts and culture. While touring the city’s sights would keep campers busy for days, perhaps some of the most unusual and fascinating attractions in the area are a half hour to an hour’s drive away.

Many people are unaware that hermitages are still in existence, but the nearby town of Christoval is home to such a community of men who have dedicated their lives to prayer and solitude. Mt. Carmel Hermitage is a colony that adheres to the Carmelite rule of living in separate dwelling places around a central chapel. Visitors can view the hermitage from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or from 1 to 4 p.m. daily.

Another unique spot is Paint Rock, an area 40 miles east of San Angelo that contains more than 1,000 limestone pictographs, some of which are hundreds of years old. The attraction is open for tours by appointment only.
