South Texas welcomes summer vacationers, Snowbirds

Posted on: July 24th, 2012 by Texas Campgrounds 2 Comments

Texas summers heat up quickly and usually don’t let up until October when a nice cold front comes through. So many Texans and visitors from out of state flock to the beaches of South Padre Island to cool off in the Gulf of Mexico waves and relax in the sand.

With plenty of fishing, wave surfing, boating, historical sights, restaurants and shopping, tourists will not have to go very far from the RV park for an enjoyable vacation. And member park South Padre KOA is right on the island, with full hook-up sites, cabin rentals and even a heated pool.

If you’d rather stay on the mainland and take a day trip out to the beach, there are many parks in nearby Brownsville, like Paul’s RV Park, Breeze Lake RV Campground and Rio RV Park. These campgrounds attract many Winter Texans or “Snowbirds” but get visitors year-round who prefer a more tropical, friendly climate not far from the beach.

These parks host daily activities, concerts, live entertainment, potlucks and more. And the area is rich with historic sites and cultural festivals throughout the year. There is plenty to do for nature lovers in Brownsville too, including birding, hiking, golfing, fishing and tours.

Find sunshine and citrus in The Valley

The Southernmost tip of Texas is often called “The Valley”, short for the Rio Grande Valley. But the area is not in fact a valley anymore. It contains many small lakes of water cut off from the main Rio Grande River and attracts many visitors to see the many wildlife refuges, visit the beaches of South Padre Island and taste the juicy citrus grown fresh in the area.

Many Winter Texans or “Snowbirds” stay in The Valley during the winter, driving their RVs down from various northern states to experience the warm climate and friendly parks located in the area.

The younger college crowd swarms South Padre Island and surrounding areas during Spring Break. And families visit various RV parks and resorts throughout the year for a family vacation filled with outdoor activities and sunshine.

Many museums, historical landmarks and wildlife areas can be found in this region. Bird watching, boating, fishing, hiking and whitewater rafting are also very popular, especially for families on vacation or Winter Texans ready to explore.
