Houston is the largest city in Texas, named after General Sam Houston who served as the President of the Republic of Texas at the time the city was incorporated. The region is known for oil and gas, the Texas Medical Center and Johnson Space Center, where NASA Mission Control is located.

Millions of visitors come to the region every year to visit the downtown Theater District, go to a Texans, Astros or Rockets game, visit NASA or the beaches of Galveston. Houston is also home to many parks, museums, the Houston Zoo, and shopping at the Galleria — Texas’ largest shopping Mall.

Though Houston is known for high heat and humidity during the summers, residents and guests find many ways to stay cool. The fountains at Discovery Green downtown are a popular spot for kids to run through in the heat. Houston’s SplashTown Waterpark and Galveston’s Schlitterbahn and beaches draw millions to their cool waters. And the Downtown Aquarium, Museum of Natural Science and the Museum of Fine Arts offer some educational fun and air conditioning for the whole family.

Houston is also home to some of Texas’ biggest festivals, especially the Houston Rodeo running from the end of February to early March. This event, held in Reliant Stadium, is the world’s largest entertainment and livestock event. Performers have included The Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Blake Shelton and many more. The diverse city also hosts the Houston Greek Festival, Art Car Parade, and festivals for just about every culture and interest.
